"It will get [young people] thinking about the role of the media in the way people view each other and issues surrounding race, homophobia, and Islamophobia." - Teacher, Tower Hamlets
This series of suggested activities for both Primary and Secondary school supplement Maya Production's newest play, The Croydon Avengers, by Oladipo Agboluaje. The play draws inspiration from a cross-arts participatory project that Maya Production ran with young people and refugees in Croydon, South London.
The Croydon Avengers is specifically aimed at young audiences (age 8-14) and its unique style blends comic book visuals with action-packed martial arts to tell a funny, powerful story of terrorists threats, heroism and true friendship in an England that seems frightened of anyone who's different.
The educational resources can be used in conjunction with the play or independently to engage students with topics such as identity, discrimination and media presentation. These activities are interdisciplinary and can be used to support learning within subjects such as English, Citizenship, PSHE, Drama, Arts and Design, and Media Studies.
After seeing the play, download the interdisciplinary creative activities below. Different resources are available for Primary and Secondary school.
We would like to thank teachers at Central Foundation Girls School and St Anthony's Catholic Primary School for contributing to the creation of these educational resources.
WHAT IS THE PLAY ABOUT?
Regina Rump is on the rampage! A trio of masked vigilantes send Croydon's crime rate plummeting. They've run away from their war-torn homes and are just trying to help. But Regina's not happy about it.
She orders her media outlet, 'Rump News', to unmask the trio and get them off the streets. Are they terrorists? Criminals? Either way, she thinks they're a threat to British identity.
Then a freak accident at the Gatwick deportation centre gives the trio powers beyond their wildest dreams. Can three teenage refugees really become the saviours of a doomed nation?
